I wanted to ask your advice on what video editing software you'd recommend to a noob like me? I have no idea where to begin!

I'm afraid I can't help you out much, for I too am a video editing n00b. I know, hard to believe isn't it? :-P

The software I use to edit my videos are Windows Movie Maker (that comes with Windows XP) for basic editing and Adobe Flash for more complex effects (the trouble is the exported video file's image quality degrades ever so slightly).
