19 Jul 2006 Rocky Horror Picture Show Review

[Review] There's one word that comes to mind when I think of the Rocky Horror Picture Show stage musical; fun.

The basic plotline is a newly engaged couple called Brad (asshole) and Janet (slut) have a breakdown in an isolated area and must pay a call to the bizarre residence of Dr. Frank-N-Furter. Well, it's not that bizarre really if you often see sweet transvestive mad scientists in persue of making "the perfect man", along with cross-gender sex scenes, aliens from Transylvania, and lots of singing and dancing.

The whole experience was brilliant from start to finish. The actors were all true to their characters and they had really strong singing voices. The performace was entertaining and engaging. I didn't know at the time but the audience were allowed (nay, encouraged) to shout out at the actor in an attempt to put them off (which did breifly happen on some occasions).

Speaking of audience participation, some of the people in the audience dressed up as the characters in the musical. I was warned about this in advance. So I joined in and dressed up as Eddie (or more like a variation of Eddie. Nothing quite screams out 80s like a denim jacket):

Grax's studded Eddie jacket
The pretty people 1
The pretty people 2

I look stunning in my custom denim jacket, wouldn't you agree?

The only minor complaint I had with the whole thing was the actor playing at Dr. Frank-N-Furter, and its only cos I'm comparing it to the movie's doctor performed by Tim Curry. Sure the guy had the look, but his voice was... I dunno... too manly. There wasn't a hint of gay campness in his voice, like there is with Tim Curry's voice. But that's cos I'm spoilt by the perfection that is Tim Curry as the good doctor. It didn't spoil the overall experience really.

Bottom line is if you haven't seen it for God sake go see it. Better yet, go rent the DVD, watch it, re-watch it with the "audience participation" feature activated, learn yer lines, dress up, and then go watch the stage show. Your life will be that little bit more fun because of it.

Gravatar This movie sucks. I feel like I'm one of the only people in the world that thinks this.
