12 Mar 2005 Shark Tale review

[Review] When a film studio produces a great film that pleases everyone, it can be seen as a curse as well as a blessing. More often than not it means that whatever the studio makes just won't be the same. With this in mind here's my review of Shark Tale, from the creators of the great Shrek™ series.

The basic story is that Oscar (Will Smith) teams up with a closet-vegetarian Shark (Jack Black) and create the lie that Oscar is a Shark Slayer, even though he's quite the nobody. It's your generic "A little white lie that goes wildly out of control with 'funny' results" storyline, you've heard this story loads of time. Throw in a few other stars like Robert De Niro, Renée Zellweger, Angelina Jolie and make up some crappy remix song for the film (FYI, Missy Elliott and Christina Aguilera make a cameo appearance, albeit in cheesy characterised fishy form) and that about wraps it up. I've probably ruined the film for you now by telling you that it's a generic storyline. After all you know what happens in those stories, including all those cheesy puns that go along with it. I probably should say that I'm sorry but that would be lying.

That's the major problem with this film; it's all been done before. They could have condensed this into a 30-45mins television show and it wouldn't have lost anything in its transaction. Don't get me wrong, it's not a crap film. I'm sure that this'll make some kid or someone who has never been exposed to a little thing called television really happy. But this film is not for me. I'm a twenty-something man that has been scarred through years of TV exposure, a man who has man-desires (I wish I could say that without it making me sounds gay). I ain't got time for kid's shows.... Unless it's cool, like old school Transformers or even Centurions. Now that kicked ass and I defy anyone who disagrees!

I definitely wouldn't recommend seeing this at the cinema, though it's a bit late now seeing as it's gone to DVD now. Bottom line is I wouldn't recommend paying to watch this. Get your sucker friend to get this. Or you can wait until it comes out on TV.
